View Full Version : "Selective" Hunters Poll- Broken/Missing Antler

So for all of us "selective" hunters. Yes I'm one of them. We spend all season looking for a particular animal or an animal of particular size. I'll make an option for meat hunters to include everyone on the site.
My question is. You finally find the animal you've been chasing all season. Your going to get a clear ethical shot. However you realize he's broken off a tine/main beam. For you late season whitetail hunters lets say perhaps he's shed one antler. Do you harvest him or wait for the next season hoping to get another chance.

Please no "hate" comments towards selective hunters. We all enjoy the outdoors. We all eat the fabulous meat.
1/2 slam

Having a missing tine/point only adds to the character of the rack hangin in my garage...

if I haven't bagged a buck yet and the season is almost over, then he drops and goes with me
if I already have one in the freezer then he walks
it'd be a shame to hunt a fine specimen and then take him in less than magnificent shape
part of the beauty of bagging a "trophy", and I use the word loosely, is the mount he will make later.
I am not a trophy hunter and probably never will be, but if you're gonna show off a buck on the wall, he should at least have the chance to look his best

If its a minor point then Ill consider shooting and getting it fixed, but if its a major point or mainbeam then he's walking to see another day.

I agree with 1/2 slam, if he's busted up he walks. Simple as that.
meat.
I have zero problems with selective hunters. There are some great arguements to "Tropy hunt"
but i do not get to hunt awesome deer packed country all season.I struggle here on SVI. I am proud of every deer i kill. i am way more picky in the interior when it comes to deer.,,, well untill the end of the hunt.

If it's late in the season and if the freezer is empty then off to the meat locker he goes. :)

I hit, wait till next year.
But it would depend.
If it was just a tine broken, I'd probably still take it.

It depends on the species, a rutting mulie might get a pass, elk, moose or whitetail will probably hit the dirt!

If he gives me a shot then yes I'll take the shot. Only use the antlers for decorating the garden or the shed anyway. Only reason I wouldn't shoot him is if he's standing alongside a younger buck then I would take the smaller.

A rutted out mulie walks.
Totally depends on the buck. If it is a buck that I have put a ton of time and effort into for several years, where I have taken his pictures, picked up his sheds and watched him grow up, then I'm going to attempt to kill him no matter what he's got broken. If it is a buck that I've never seen before and I don't have a personal connection with, then he's going to walk. I actually have a target buck that I've been watching the last 5 or so years that I call "Broken Buck". He's been broken every year I've seen him. I'd love to see him during the season intact, but would have no problem pulling the pin on him regardless of what he has broken. Trophy hunting to me means way way more than 'score'. Outsmarting a big ol' bruiser on his home turf is where I get excited. Broken Buck is one of those smart ol' bucks that really knows how to live in some tuff ass ground. Getting him kill during the season is more than a challenge. Here are some pics of him from last winter. He broke off a G4, a mainbeam and a few extras that year.

i would say it depends on the size of the break and the size of the buck overall. bucks that are busted up have character and thats prety good to see. i would also say its dependant on the species. if its a mule deer i would be more selective but a whitetail i would probly shoot regardless if it was a nice deer. i would never pass an old bruser with a busted tine. i have not passed on any deer with broken tines yet but i have passed a few nice bucks.

Last year I was after this WT buck for about 6 weeks if he showed up with a broken tine or antler I would drop him because I outsmarted him..

If I am looking for a wall hanger buck and don't need anymore sausage meat I would let him walk. We had a nice buck show on the TC a couple years ago that looked good then 3 hours later he came back missing 3 points. I would have not taken him based on what he had been. He got to live another year and was never seen again so you never know which is the right call.
