first off a special thanks to Mike aka 6.5x55mm

In the short 2hr span that we were together 6.5x55mm, me and Tony the Italian saw 6 moose 3-4 deer, two rabbits and one small 2yr bear. At first I was going to take the bear but 6.5x55mm and Tony told me to pass it was too small.

6.5x55mm had to leave because he had to work so Tony and I headed out to the grassy areas he had showed us by foot. I walked down to the second patch and Tony to the third. After an hour and a half I walked up to meet Tony and we decided to walk back down to first patch to look around, upon coming around the bend on the rd I spotted a nice brown bear feeding on the grass in the first open grassy patch. Tony urged me to wait and try to get closer. I knew I could hit it at that distance so I decided to take the shot against Tony opinion. The problem was the bear was facing us not offering a broadside shot. I quickly put down the Harris bipod and aimed for the back of his head while he fed. The bear was feeding then walking a few feet then stopping and continuing to feed off and on. I waited, fired and hit him on the head right by neck. He dropped!

Nice Bear! Glad to see all the time and effort has paid off for you. So you shot him in the neck just behind his head as he was grazing towards you? That makes for an interesting shot. What were you using for a rifle? 300 win? It's nice to see some guys are getting some bears. Congratulations on a nice brown bear.

head shot, i aimed for the back of the head/neck. The bullet hit him between the ears.

there was sign all over, later I saw another bear that must have been the same size but jet black. It was running up a clear cut by where we parked, it offered a shot when it stopped but didn't even think about getting the guns out because we were celebrating...wine/bear oh I mean beer

A buddy of mine has harvested a bear this spring, using the only available shot placement (at the time), a head shot. He mentioned not having to split the lips, already done ? :) I'll have to suggest the idea of painting the various pieces different colors, for the 'Rubics Cube' look.

what caliber did he use? the only damage I could see was blood out of the ears and nose.

My taxidermist is taking care of the skull, he's going to bleach it, I'll post the picture when i get it back

yes I have....I've seen tonne of bears and have a few buddys that were lucky enough to bag one while I was along for the trip.

I'm done for bears now so its onto Moose. I leave in 59 days for this trip. We start are drive to catch the plane on Aug 12, catching the plane on the 13th and arriving that day to set up camp. The 15th is opening day :twisted: This trip is a given that we'll get our two moose. I'm hoping to be lucky enough to get a LEH for Grizzly in the area for the same time :P

What lake are you flying into? I flew into Trimble lake twice a few years ago. We only got 3 moose in 2 years but those trips will last me a lifetime.
Did you get the last guy locally or in the same area as your cinammon?

He's talking about an eastern cottontail rabbit, schedule C. It's a non-indigenous animal, so they compete with native wildlife for habitat and food. Along the same lines as crows or starlings.

I've also read that here on the island we also have European rabbits that were introduced and you can shoot them pretty much anytime of year and no limit. They come in multi colors ranging from black, grey, beige, to almost orange. They fall under section C. the only thing is most of them live in town along the highways. I've counted over 30 in a 100 yard stretch of highway going to the Nanaimo airport one morning. I don't think we have any snow shoe hair on the island just domesticated rabbits gone wild.
