Hybrid bucks

I shot my first mule deer buck last year, still trying for my first white tailed buck. I hope this year is my year! I found some info about hybrid bucks in BC, I was wondering if anybody has some pics of hybrid bucks they have shot and could post them so I know what to look for next time I go hunting.

Do a search about Hybrids and you'll find its been discussed many times over.

You probably won't see a hybrid in your lifetime of hunting so I wouldn't worry about trying to find one. Rumour had it though McBride has fields of them from a member who used to frequent the site, but I've yet to see one in all my travels there.

I've seen more hemaphrodite deer (well WT does with antlers, or in some cases antler, like a unicorn)than I have hybrids, but I have seen some mulie bucks with all their points coming off a main beam, so I suppose they might have been. Would likely need to do a DNA test to be sure though.

After reading the story on BC Outdoors I thought maybe it was a popular species in BC. Only seen mule deer and whitetail deer and black tail deer in my CORE book, confused me when I read about the hybrids. If you do shoot a hybrid, what tag do you cut if you have both in your hunters booklet? It didn't say in the article what tag the hunter cut

Hybrids are not popular, nor are they abundant. Chances are you will never see one in your lifetime like most of us.

I wouldn't worry about it. Stick with mule deer and white-tailed deer like you know them and you'll be fine!

Most of the time when someone thinks they have shot a hybrid, it's just a mule deer with a 3x3 antler configuration that makes them think it's a whitetail rack. I did see an honest hybrid in a US hunting magazine once, it was years ago. I've never heard of one being shot in BC.

I have shot several hybrid blacktail/mule deer bucks over the years most came from the Sawaqua area just off the Coquihalla Hwy but you can find them anywhere that blacktail/mule deer ranges intersect with each other.

and here is a bit of info that you may not know it has now been proven thru DNA studies that it was a whitetail/blacktail getting together many years ago that created mule deer...

So technically other than mule deer are recognized as their own species now they are a hybrid...

If you ever shoot a hybrid and thats a BIG "IF", tag the animal as to what it looks like the most. Ignore, the antlers and look at the rest of the animal, if it looks like a mulie, tag it as a mulie and so forth for a whitetail. But once again do not look use the anters as a guide to figuring out what species it is. As another member put it, most "hybrids" are just a 3 point mulie (like the BC outdooors blog) with a a missing point so their antlers looks like those of a whitetail.

just spend time in the bush and form opinions for yourself, not worth spending time or looking for a freak of nature that may be common or non existant. it would be like hunting for a deer with a broken left foot and a missing right ear. whats the point?
Magizines and the net are entertainment filled with information, knowledge is best learned in the field.

Racks are absolutely the "least" conclusive way to identify a hybrid. Dozens of hybrid claims are made every year based on racks, 99.9% of these claims are erroneous. The tail is the more widely accepted visual identifying feature.

I read the BC Outdoors article. I find it quite a stretch of imagination that an experienced and supposedly knowledgeable outdoor writer kills, then photographs a deer he declares a hybrid. Yet he takes no pictures of any hybrid charasteristics to identify this supposed hybrid. If I were an author with any credibility, wanted to maintain any credibility, was planning to write an article about hybrids, really did shoot an actual hybrid, I would be all over it taking pictures to prove it and show what a hybrid actually looks like..........Major credibility fail.......:rolleyes:

Absolutely 100% correct. All I see in the article is a mule deer plain and simple.

If I shot a "real" hybrid, I'd be taking pictures of the antlers, the body and especially the tail, and since taking pictures is fast, I wouldn't be worrying too much about a bear nearby.I have a rifle, you know! Then I would bring that deer to a CO or better yet, a biologist!

The one hybrid I saw in the US magazine I talked about before had lots of pictures that confirmed a true hybrid. Tyler, if you ever become the .000001% of hunters to shoot a hybrid, make sure you take pictures to prove it!:-D
