I am a new member on this site, and have only been hunting SERIOUSLY for 4 years now. I just got back from my second trip ever hunting up in the interior (Coastal Blacktail hunter mostly...) and myself and my partners owe a lot of my success on that hunt to the members of this online community, and especially to Sawmill.
I read A LOT of posts on this site before heading up and I found a lot of great info on a lot of areas. I also sent off some private messages to a few guys who sounded like they knew the areas I was interested in, and I got some very helpful replies.
My father and I had the pleasure of meeting Sawmill (Joe) near Cranbrook where he lives, and I have to say, he is a prince among men and hunters. Joe welcomed us into his house, we had a short visit and looked over some great racks he has in his basement, and then he took us on a little tour of a local area and gave us an idea of where we could find some elk and whitetails.
It was a dream of my father's to get a nice dry cow (as he just turned 65) because he remembered my grandfather always going into the interior to get one when my dad was a child. They never got to go together... so here I was with my dad to get it done. We had only 4 days to scout before rifle season - my crossbow in hand - and 6 days to get the job done once rifle season started. Most of the guys and gals on here know that if it wasn't for the help I received from Joe and many other members on this site, we would have never got the HUGE cow we connected with on our second last day, as we weren't interested in shooting an elk on some farmers field... This was the biggest cow in the herd and it was taken still hunting in thick timber near the herd's water source around 7:30 am. There was also a nice bull who turned out to be a barely legal 5x6, but he was moving too fast to see the inch and a half 6th tine in the timber.... another story all together.
Anyways, my father and I, along with our other hunting partner had the trip of a lifetime (also got a nice whitetail buck) and we will definitely be back to the interior next year. We owe a lot of our success to Sawmill, and many others whom I won't mention so they don't get the same barrage of messages Joe is about to get once some people read this post and try to hunt him down and move in with him! Sorry Joe... you are a class A guy, and a true gentleman among hunters.
Thanks to you all, and hope the season is good to you!
