But it looks like we are only getting less than 20 percent of what we are applying for on the whole.
I wonder if a Freedom of Info request would show actual numbers applied for, compared to those actually granted, compared to number of authorizations listed in the synopsis.

This is the most interesting poll I have seen on this site....411 respondents is fantastic.
If you consider this to be a representative sample, its interesting to note that:
about 1/2 of the people that entered got NIL.
about 1/3 of the people that entered received one (1) authorization, which makes up just over 1/2 of the total authorizations.
about 1/6th of the people that entered received almost 1/2 of the authorizations!I'm not suggesting this, but its interesting to think about...if you could apply for as many tags as you want, but were limited to recieving a maximum of 1 tag per hunter, almost 50% of the people who got nothing would have received one. ie. almost 75% of entrants would get one authorization, and only a little more than 25% would get none (ie. it would almost cut in half the # of people that get NIL).

and so it should be, 1 LEH authorization per hunter, per year,
once your picked, that's it until next years draw,,, give more people a fair chance! to participate,

from my experience over the many years i have been applying for leh tags has always been to put in for what i'd like in areas that i know i can afford at the time and can have a better then average chance at getting that draw.dont get me wrong here as every year i have put in for sheep and bison and not once have i ever recieved a tag for them.on the other hand when i comes to putting in for deer i always go local as i try to keep the price per pound of meat down and ry to do my part for conservation by taking a doe, when i'm unsuccessful i say "oh well " and if i run into anyone around my area i am more then willing to go out of my way and have even been know to make a phone call or even draw a map as to where they can go straight there and harvest that doe.
just about every year either myself or the wife gets at least 1 leh each be it for elk, goat, grizz and most years we will get 2 each.
from what i have seen most of the people put in for animals that are close to home then get all pissy when they don't get it even after x number of years even though the odds are greatly against they're favor.
the way i see it is that the leh system may be flawed in some ways but its way better then anywhere else in canada, not only that but there are way more ampel oppertunities here for harvesting meat and getting it the freezer then anywhere else in canada.
ya i'm sorry it suck for those that dont ever seam to get a draw on the leh yet at the same time i have always researched every possibily in everyway i could imagine and done this for our imediate family ever since leh was implemented .when we send our cards in we have always had some confidence of recieving something.only once in my life of leh have i not gotten at least 1 draw.so i must be doing something right because i sure dont have any luck with anything else in my life thats for sure.
and for all the money i have spent on leh's that were unsuccessful to that i say "well that cash has gone for the benefit of everyone in this province including myself and i know we all get to reap those rewards by just being out there doing what we love"
so smile:smile: everyone ,season is just around the corner and guess what!!!!!
we all get to be out there hopefully harvesting an animal or 2 and at the very least enjoying this place we get to call home.

All the people would still put in for the same tags - you'd just have more competition for the 'high demand draws' and people with deep pockets buying the tags, no different than the Premier's resident draw a couple years ago.
You'd end up with a pile of hunts that go under-subscribed.
The people who consistently get drawn are the people who put in for low odds draw (<2:1).
Demand is what it is.
(BTW, considering this poll or website a representative sample makes me wanna )

I think all tags should go similar to moose. If you get one one year your name goes to the bottom of the pile and those that don't get a draw for a particular animal stay at the top. It shouldn't matter the region it should only depend on species. If a person who got drawn last year puts in for a tag in a region nobody hunts then they may get a tag again, but these guys who get sweet tags year after year while others like my Dad don't get a single tag in eight years is bullshit.
On another note you should have to have a current hunting licence to even buy a limited entry tag and should have to include the number of that licence on the LEH application.

Just curious as to why some think drawing a tag at 1:1 odds to be anything special??? Heck, some of these underprescibed hunts should be thought of as Torture instead. So I draw one of these tags with a hellish hunt in front of me and odds of actually seeing success pretty much NIL and I should give up drawing any other tag that year???? I think if all the whinners that didn't get drawn actually put in for some of these lowodds hunts, they would quickly see that just because you get a tag, doen't mean the gods have shone down upon you.

Which begs the question: if there hasn't been an animal shot since smokeless powder was created why is it LEH?

Knock yourselves out dreaming up whatever you want for LEH draw systems. However, since everyone's ultimate odds depend entirely on harvest objectives and not on "buy your license first" or "preference points" or any other overly-complex solutions, it doesn't make any improvement to the current random draw we have.
If the harvest target is X number of animals, there will be Y number of guys allowed to hunt, and Z number of guys who want to hunt. In all systems, the hunt will be designed to harvest X animals, which will determine your overall chance of success, not anything else.

I'm not dreaming or scheming, or suggesting any changes....just thought it was interesting to note that in this particular population 1/6th of the applicants ended up with half of the draws, and that if it was more "spread out" about 75% of the applicants could have been successful.
I haven't thought through what the consequences of limiting success to 1 LEH per year would be, so I am not suggesting it. I am not sure if folks would buy less applications or more, or whether folks would concentrate on the ones they really want and quit applying for the low odds hunts just in case its the only one they get.
Again, just thought it was interesting to see how concentrated the success ends up being.

Which begs the question: if there hasn't been an animal shot since smokeless powder was created why is it LEH?
Very good point. I few years back put in for goat in the kooteneys two years in a row. The odds were like .8 to 1 so I got the tag each year. Went a scouted the area in August both times and saw nothing. The first year I went twice and only saw a black bear and the second time I actually spotted some goats about a 3 day hike away and probably out of the zone I had been drawn in. I think the heli skiiers had an adverse affect on the goats and they just were not around. So why is there an LEH in that area ??
from my experience over the many years i have been applying for leh tags has always been to put in for what i'd like in areas that i know i can afford at the time and can have a better then average chance at getting that draw.
This is what I do as well. I just can't afford the time anymore to go into areas that have these low odds and take three weeks of driving andd hiking just to get a doe. I put in for LEH in areas that have good odds and I can afford to put the time in to hunt.

There are a couple of jurisdictions that versions that are somewhat related to this. The high demand areas are still where everybody puts in.
The people who are drawn multiple times are the people who put in for the low odds (under subscribed) draws. I average 3 draws per year, but the only hunts I put in for that are higher than 2:1 are elk/buffalo and sheep. I've never gotten an LEH that's better than 5:1.
When you think about it it makes sense.
There are several derivations or ways to play around with things. Another thing you could do is have hunters pick whether they're going to put in for LEH or hunt a GOS even before the draw or limit them to that zone or whatever. There are a million ways to skin a cat.
The biggest key to all of this is are we harvesting as many animals as we can/should be/supposed to - if we aren't, why not and how can we fix it?
There's opportunity to let thousands of more people go hunting and animals that are dying of old age every year in BC. It makes no sense.
Dreaming's good.

The people who are drawn multiple times are the people who put in for the low odds (under subscribed) draws.
This only makes sense. I can't figure out people who have been putting in LEH for 20-25 years and have never had a draw...I can only assume that they are putting for tough odds hunts only and are unwilling to put in the effort to seek out the opportunities of undersubscribed hunts. As an example, what would you rather choose: A 9 or 10:1 Region 5 moose hunt with great harvest rates but 10, 15 or 20 years between draw success or go for a 0.5, 1 or 1:5 Region 5 moose hunt with historically low harvest rates (probably mostly due to lack of effort) but the chance to hunt it every year or two, likely with success every now and then! You could potentially shoot 3,4,5+ moose in an unsubscribed zone before you every get drawn for the higher odds hunt! After all, aren't we always asking for more opportunities to hunt anyways? A week in the bush, even unsuccessful, is better than a week at work or sitting on the couch complaining about LEH...at least that is what everyone on this site proclaims...
I average 3 draws per year, but the only hunts I put in for that are higher than 2:1 are elk/buffalo and sheep. I've never gotten an LEH that's better than 5:1.
I have had 7 draws in 8 years of putting in, for the most part < 2:1 hunts and have decent harvest success filling most tags. I generally only put in 2 to 3 applications per year as well. In that time I have had two draws at higher than 7:1 so I guess I should consider myself pretty lucky. One was a 4-17 spring grizz draw which I never used (we can blame a mutual friend for that one) and one is an elk draw at 8.8:1 last year. Just waiting for the authorization to see what the odds were this year. I still can't believe I didn't get the Kamloops Lake sheep draw at 961:1 odds last year...screw LEH .
^^ You guys said it.
That being said, our family has been overly lucky with bull moose draws, averaging one every two years between the three of us (non-shared hunts) at odds of usually 8:1
MY only quirk for this year's LEH is my second choice goat odds. Last year's first choice odds were 0.0:1 for three tags. So I made my second choice that code, figuring that I would at least try if I got it. I didn't get it. I will be looking forward to seeing what the first choice odds for that unit were in 2009.

Where'd you put in? There are a few hunts where residents haven't shot a goat in years and the goats have disappeared so LEH auths were cut back.
Why don't you just go to a GOS area for goats - lots of them north of PG and lots of goats.

It's always far easier to complain than it is to get out and hunt.

The goat tag odds seem to fluctuate a lot, especially in the Robson Valley. I once got a goat draw in the Holmes on my second choice as it went 0:1. Looking at it this year it is up to 4:1 (up from 1:1 last year, same number of authorizations). I don't recall what it was the year after it went 0:1 but the trend would suggest it was probably a much higher. Looking through this years and last years synopsis they all seem to have this trend, 3 or 4:1 odds one year followed by ~1:1 odds the next. And no I didn't fill the tag, but only because I harvested a goat in a GOS earlier in the season. I did all the research to go in and had my access and camp location picked out but an easier opportunity presented itself!
Where'd you put in? There are a few hunts where residents haven't shot a goat in years and the goats have disappeared so LEH auths were cut back.
Why don't you just go to a GOS area for goats - lots of them north of PG and lots of goats.
To drive much further than McBride costs fuel money that I just don't have. I've noticed that as well JML, it's hard to predict the 7-03 odds!

Go north then. 5 hour drive from PG ain't f'all. Split the gas with a buddy and it's a cheap trip.
There's always lots of beer cans in the ditches around PG - maybe a second job.

First you got to find a buddy that's half as crazy as you and wants to climb a facking mountain to stare at the tail end of a goat going over the top of the next one. Two hours is an after-class weekend jaunt. Five hours is un-manageable. You forget who I work for

Leave after work, hike in the next morning and you'll easily get 1 1/2 days of hunting in. Plenty of time to kill a rock antelope.

Lots of Bud cans in the ditches up there. I'll throw an O'Douls tin out next time I'm through the area to help the cause.
Hey, a guy picking up beer tins to fund a hunt could get the nickname "Tinney"!
1 for 9 between my dad, brother and I this year, but it's a sechelt elk so I am not too upset. Time to research now as I've never hunted the Sunshine Coast before.

I always spend hours and hours studying the maps and regs trying to piece together my plan of attack for the Leh draws and some years its excellent and other years not so good.
This year I was 4 for 7, moose, goat, whitey, sheep.
My hunting buddy was 3 for 6, moose goat, muley.
2008- we went 1 for 14 combined,
2007 - 3/14
2006 - 3/14
It never hurts to have alternative plans when dealing with LEH,, but when your drawn it does add to the adventures of hunting.

not ture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i had a buddy who put in his first time for 4 LEH ever and didnt win anything
My 5th season and the only draw I've ever got was the "rookie draw" that everyone gets their first year. Maybe this means I'm destined to win the 6/49 instead;).
