Jetted out of town at 3:30 this morning to hit my newer Reg 3 spot (Thanks Kechika) for first light. Searched and searched cut blocks that I was certain was pristine mule deer heaven. All I could find were 4 mulie doe's, not a buck in sight. So jet down 5 mins to my back-up plan.
Park the Jeep and walk 50yds into the cut. Immediately I see this deer with antlers! Bonus!! I had the bino's on him for 2 seconds prior to him jumping down into a cooley, couldn't tell anything other than he was a he. I hustle to get on top of him and see him just entering into a small group of aspens. A few seconds later I see him run out, not alarmed, but looks like he was rutting hard after something.
Wait a minute.... That's a weird sight... That deer doesn't have a white butt.... And those antlers kind look weird... A whitetail!!?? Uhoh... hmmmm am I sure I bought a whitey just-in-case tag? Of course I did silly!!
Bang...Flop!
I was exactly 214yds (GPS) away as I saw him run out of the aspens, I found the perfect stup just inviting me to go prone on it for the perfect shot. One shot from trusty M70 270 straight to the boiler room and he had no clue what hit him! Stopped him in mid stride and he was down and out before I even had the time to release my finger from the trigger!
I was so pumped up!! I thought I left the whitetails behind me in Alberta!? Sure there are bigger deer in the bush, but this small 5X5 will do nicely for my first ever whitetail!! This was one of the last things I thought I'd be bringing home today! I hope I'm not using up all my hunting luck in my first season! Mmmmmmm peppered salami!!
