hi i want a good deer gun but cant decide between a lever action 30 30 or bolt action 308.which one would be better for coyotes to deer and maybe moose and elk later on.

Bolt Action 308 hands down!

The 308 by a mile; very versatile cartridge. Too much gun for coyotes if you want to harvest the pelts. Perfect for deer, elk and moose provided you select the correct ammunition for the job.

I curious, why are you limited to these 2 particular options?

30-30 is a good timber gun. .308 is definately more versatile though.

I agree with this one. Low recoil and will take everything. Matching ballistics would be the 7mm 08. in a shorter action.

Savage would be one for sure in B/A in a new rifle.

For that price range - Savage, hands down They even make one with a wood stock for about $550 (look for a "G" in the model number), but you might have to ask around a few places to find one.

+1 for Savage. I had one in 308 (American Classic mod. 14), good handling gun, just never killed anything with it, unfortunately.

(since changed to 25-06 for a more fitting deer calibre)
