To add a bit more optimism to this site I thought I'd start a thread where everyone can post up pics or stories of how you have helped other hunters...I'll start:

A buddy and I had a bit of a frustrating region 8 elk hunt for a few days where we were on sign (and some very fresh), but the elk would not respond to calls at all...so I took him out to a spot of mine that I knew had whitetail, and where I had harvested WT in the past, as he hadn't harvested an animal in about 3 seasons - I took him to this area, he went one way, I went another and he hammered this awesome buck:

Good thread idea.

I've helped out with a lot of stuff like jacks, tires, tools, jump starts. Happily give up first light to help a fellow hunter with a flat or anything, pointed a few people towards bears and grouse.

Never needed help yet but it's inventible and I'm pretty sure I'll have a hand when I need one. Had lots of people roll up to me when I'm stopped and ask if everything is ok or if I need anything, even when I was on foot once

Thanks buddy....he's not anew hunter but he was definitely pumped to shoot something after not getting that opportunity the last few years...definitely worth the wait, as he hammered a stud buck....

I was parked at a trailhead last year sleeping in the truck when at about 2am I heard my dog start to growl, I wake to 3 head lamps coming our way and the dogs let out like holy hell! Scared the crap out of a kid, his dad and his grandfather. 3 generations of hunters out together when their truck had crapped out. they were walking the fsr looking for a ride back down to their deer camp, they piled in and we brought them back to camp. Nice guys, and cool to see three generations out hunting together!!

Saturday came across a fella with his truck stuck in the mud at the same time i got stuck, so together after a hour of digging we got my truck out then i towed his truck out. good times.

LOL I know eh, I told him we'll just have to do a Euro....ya I've heard that about the majority of elk hunting thus far as well unfortunately....

We were sheep hunting one year. We left in the early am and hiked up a creek draw. Going was pretty easy.
About 1.5 hrs in we decided to take the packs off and have a water break. Right where we stopped there was a couple that were just putting their packs on as they started hiking the evening before. Turns out it was her first sheep hunt and her partner had yet to harvest a ram. She had good positive attitude but she also noted about how tough the going was up to that point. We gave them some general info about water up top and different possible routes that they could take to gain some elevation.
We wished the good luck as we parted. They opted to head straight up a super steep hard -packer slide as the creek draw was starting to get nasty.

They were about 100 yards straight up behind a clump of trees when I heard a strange noise. One of her tin cups had called off her pack and rolled right down beside us. I didn’t hesitate and told my partner that I’d be right back.
I grabbed the cup and hiked up the hill as fast as I could(my legs were still feeling fresh).
When I got to them and passed her the cup she just shook her head and said...”Dude! You rock!”
I then told her that she might want to put the shiny tin cups inside her pack so she wouldn’t lose them again and so that they were shiny beacons for the sheep to spot them.
I wished them luck again and scurried back down to the bottom.

Was in my deer stand last December and had a doe in close by. Watched as an elderly gentleman walked into my stand, completely oblivious to my stand. This year, had 2 different hunters (both active HBCers) whom I've never met provide me with their cell numbers and offers to assist me if needed. Both knew I was hunting elk solo near their homes and had no problem coming to help if I was in a jam.

When he found out I was going to be hunting East Koots one of the legendary members on here that lives in Cranbrook sent his phone number and offered to come help pack if we got lucky. Nice guy.

We did get lucky (story coming after moose hunt this week) but were a long way from Cranbrook so didn't take him up on it.

I had a great experience once up in some beautiful alpine out of Lillooet. I had headlamped up into a favorite basin and peeked into it shortly after daylight. I immediately picked up a 150 class velvet muley bedded and chewing his cud. I was glassing the rest of the basin looking for a better buck as they are usually in groups early in the season. I heard noise and spotted a father with his 12 year old son approaching. I motioned them to be quiet and stay low. When they got up to me I told them I was watching a buck. The father said he knew that as they had spotted the buck from another ridge and had been hustling to get to it. I told him the buck was his and pointed out its location. Together we devised a plan for a stalk and I stayed with his son to give hand signals to help him move in on the buck from above treeline. About 45 minutes later we watched him shoot that buck. The look on his sons face surely made him a hunter for life! We made our way over to his dad and I got to be part of their celebration. I was a young man in my mid 20s and that event touched me. The father shook my hand and told me he owed me half a deer! I politely declined so he told me to come by his camp for a drink later. I hunted the rest of the day with a smile on my face! I recall his name was Ron and he was a telus lineman. That happened about 30 years ago and I remember it vividly.

Not sure who you've been chatting with but from what I'm experiencing and hearing, it's the complete opposite. Not to mention this is prime time right now.

Well the elk sure were quiet in the portion of reg 8 I was hunting, although when I was hunting that was when it was very smokey - maybe that had an effect on the animals??

Didn’t seem to have much effect from what I could tell Harry. A few R8 bulls down over the past couple days and by all accounts the action has been pretty steady.

I was taken out duck hunting by a friend of a friend a few years back, showed me the ropes and helped me start going myself.

This year i'm taking 3 people new to waterfowl out with me, to start them up.

2 of them are first time hunters, and we're planning a big trip this nov for deer. stoked.

Was lucky enough to harvest a real ugly bull elk one year and while I was moving in for the final stalk, I bumped a real nice 160-170 class mule deer. After I had made three trips packing out the meat over the next two days, I decided I wanted to have a try at the deer. I had recently met a new hunter that was the boyfriend of a coworker of mine and I invited him to join me. I honestly think after carrying out the elk that I didn't want to kill another animal that far in alone again. Anyway, we hit the bush at first light and were about ten minutes into the climb when I stopped as I thought I had heard a bugle. Nope, off we go again. A minute or so later, again.... I lean back to my buddy and said you hear that. He calmly said "yup". I replied "well you have an elk tag?". "Yes" he replies "but I thought we were hunting for your deer?" I let out a little chuckle and said "Not anymore!" half hour later we had a 6 point bull on the ground. His first ever big game animal.
Later that year I took him out and he harvested his first whitetail, a nice 5 point. I told him that I didn't know too many people that have harvested those two animals as their "first's" Come to mention it, I don't think he has shot an elk since and that was close to 15 years ago.....

As for the elk bugling, if your in the right spot and they are hot, you'll be hearing them. I am with you though Harry, it has been a bit frustrating for me this year. Ya just gotta keep getting out there.

Took my youngest brother into one of my spots and helped him harvest his first deer on Oct 1st, and then with the subsequent 4 mile pack out.....

Met a guy on Gunnutz chatting about moose hunting in region 6. Turns out we discovered we both hunted deer in the same watershed, him for 20 years, me for close to 30.

We didn't meet up for a couple years then two years ago we agreed to meet at the camp site it turns out we both had regularly used for years but at different times of year. He was going off to his super secret hot spot he'd learned from a local years ago but he drew me a diagram on a shop towel of a pretty good place to sit and watch. Sure enough, I went in and 1 1/2 hours later shot a three point buck.

This year, two years after that first meeting, we met up again last week and on Tuesday I heard a shot from his spot as I knew what general area it was in. Went back to camp to meet up and him and me and his other buddy and buddy's girlfriend all went in to help pull his deer out as he is somewhat handicapped due to an old injury. Next day his buddy went into the same spot and shot a buck too. Having revealed the location to me, they encouraged me to go in. On Thursday I saw two does there and Friday morning 12 does and fawns but no bucks. Pretty amazing to see that many deer come through the same gap in one morning.

Like I said, I've been hunting that area since 1987 and have had spotty success despite searching for prominent deer trails and putting in many many days of hard hiking and long boring sitting too, but with the local knowledge passed on by a generous hunter, I'm more confident that next time I go, my chances will have vastly improved.

Great stories, people helping people. This is how I envision most hunters and people in general. There are a lot of good people out there that will do the right thing when the time comes around. These are the stories that happen every day around the world that you never hear about on the news but they are prevalent.
