Well with my season all wrapped up and only the range andreloading to look forward to over the next few months, I thought I’d share myhunting stories from this year.

It was a busy year with work and then trying to make up time with the family so things were a little rushed with no outings in September except for testing my trapping skills on a couple of packrats that were in myattic.

October presented an opportunity when I went back to my oldstompin grounds (Merritt) for thanksgiving dinner with the parents. Once dinnerplans were set I quickly contacted a few old work buddies to see if they wereinto a quick Saturday morning hunt. One of my buddies was committed to kidssport tourneys but thankfully another one got back to me right away. He had theweekend off and his son was home with him and they would love to do some deerhunting. He is from Douglas Lake IR so he got permission to hunt the ranchlands. Had to provide all the details quickly – vehicle make, model, color, licence plate #, who was hunting, status #’s, where exactly we’d be hunting andtimes. Plan was to pick them up early in town so that we could make the driveup to Douglas Lake and get our permit before first light and hopefully catch afew deer out in the open grasslands.

We loaded up but didn’t have the guns at the ready as wewere planning on doing that when we got the permit as we still had 30 mins ofhwy driving to do. Just as we were pulling into the IR lands Jr. pipes up inthe back “Dad, there’s a deer right there!” Of course I was doing close to 100trying to get out to the area as we were a bit late and it was just gettinglight. I looked at my buddy and asked if we should try and get it, ‘Of course’was the answer so I quickly turned the truck around and we drove back to wherehe had seen the deer. Light was still low so we quickly dug out the bino’s andsure enough the deer was still standing there! (this was my first mule deerhunting so was shocked at how long the deer was standing there watching us). Iquickly let them know from the driver’s seat that I can see a decent size rack. They bail out and rummage for their gun and ammo. Now all is still with melooking through the bino’s and father and son setting up behind the truck.Hearing the father whisper guidance to his son as the deer’s body wasobstructed by brush with only his head showing … “just aim dead centre on hishead son” BANG! I watch the deer drop like a sack of bricks! Father and son setback up after the shot and recoil to see 2 deer hoping around confused. “did Imiss dad?” he quickly handed the gun over to his dad but I quickly let themknow that the deer wouldn’t be getting up after pilling up like that and thatthe 2 deer we were seeing was a smaller 2 point and a doe. We walk up the hillthe 75 yards to find a nice 5x3 shot just below the chin into the head. We quickly gut and drag the deer down to thetruck to try to make up lost time and get still try to get the deer out in theopen.

We ended up seeing a couple of WT does, some elk way way offand more than enough coyotes. Overall we just enjoyed the drive and hikes. Wasa touching moment watching my buddy hunt and harvest a deer with his son. Wewere too busy to take pics so here is one after the fact.

The rest of October was busy again with somework and only getting out a few times for only first or last light at my Wtspot. Finally at the end of Oct I walked down to my blind at 5pm trying to bequiet but wanting to get into the blind and set myself up and wait. Scanning aroundas I come up to the blind I don’t see anything so quickly make the last dash inthe open to the blind. Just get inside and flip up my log for my seat when Ihear the dreaded huff. Crap! 3 WT does and one with a fawn looking right at meat 70 yards! I freeze and mentally get ready in case they try to make a run asthey in the middle of a cut block. Fortunately they only heard me and the windwas in my favor. The lead doe structed around with her tail up and slowly movedaway towards the timber. She was obscurded by brush but I set myself up andwaited till she walked out into the open. One more step and she presented ashot and the gun surprised me by going off as it always does and I see the deerpile up. I keep scanning to make sure no follow up shot needed and see one moredoe running away that I didn’t initially see. I hike down and find my doe down. She spun 180 and flipped over, both lunges shot out … guess the 225 grain tsxout of my 338 WM at under a 100 yards did the trick lol. Sorry for the poor pic,I forgot my phone / camera in my rush to get out that evening. Overall thathunt was less than 5 mins from leaving the truck and hiking down to the blindand shooting right away.

Next was out annual Moose hunt along the eastern shores ofQuesnel Lake. We’ve had success not only in the draw the past 3 years but alsoin getting our 2 moose. Last year we had to work at it as just before openingday it snowed 3 feet so we had to modify our hunting areas. I lost close to10lbs on that trip hiking / slogging through that snow every day. This yearonly a trace of snow so we concentrated our efforts up high. Fortunately myhunting buddies had gotten 2 mule deer the week before so some of the pressurewas off to fill the freezer and some pre-opening scouting had been done. Thefirst day was a full sun up to sun down hunt, not much seen until the afternoonwhen a squall came in with a few inches of snow and moved the moose around abit so some fresh tracks kept us going. We now knew for sure the moose were here. The next day was spent in the general area with lots of fresh sign but nothingseen. The following day it was windy and warm. We decided that the 3 of uswould go in from the road staggered with the idea of getting winded and pushinga moose down to the next one down the line. I was the last one or the furthestdownwind so had some time to kill before the rest got into position and startedto walk in. I was getting bored standing in the dark so started in on the oldovergrown skid trail, just walking about 10 – 20 steps at a time. About a 200yards up the trail I hear something running in the snow and look through thetrees to see a moose with a rack on the move. He was coming down wind andmoving up the draw at a trot. No shot so I run up the trail another 20 stepsand try to set up but only get a quick glimpse of the moose through the scope.A better hunter would have a shot but I wanted to be sure and wasn’t 100% soquickly looked at the path the moose was taking and my own. Saw that the drawand the road would meet another 80 yards up so quickly ran up another 30 yardsmentally going through what was going to happen. Stop, drop the bino’s, clickoff the safety, and get ready for the moose to come up the draw. Sure enough ithappens just as I envisioned it. The moose stops once up on the trail and see’smy shape and looks back at me. No body shot so take aim just behind the earwhen BOOM the gun shouts out and 250 grains of lead enters its skull not onlybraining him but also snapping its neck. Was very happy to see him go down asyou never know with head shots sometimes. I hear my buddies on the radio askingif anyone else heard a shot. I pip up and confirm that it was a cow draw we gotright? Because I just shot one lol. Anyways we managed to tow the beast outwith a couple of blocks and 300 ft of rope.
We spent the next 4 days hunting that general area with thebrother in law joining us, always seeing fresh sign and quickly sighting onevery large bull and 4 cows but not connecting. The one pic is my father in lawwith the grandkids recreating a picture from 30 years ago.

November was already half over and the last week I hadcommitments so had a short window to try to tag out with a WT. The plan was todrop off my father in law then proceed up to my blind and then at 8 if no deerget a load of firewood. I set up and wait it out glimpsing a deer at 200 yardsbut not long enough to bring up the gun. Thought it was a buck so was watchedthe area he went into thinking he may push out a doe. 8 am rolls around withnothing showing and a text from the father in law saying nothing seen on hisend. Just about to pack up when I hear something and look up to see a doe andthen shortly after a buck. I wait and wait until he comes into a spot to shootand know from past years that he will come up to a scent tree and rub a bit. Hedoes and I set up but of course by this time I am freezing cold, especially myhands, and the buck fever is building. Have trouble calming myself down to takea shot and finally get mad at myself and make myself calm down enough to take ashot. Not my best shooting as it entered the lower part of the shoulder andexited out the front of the chest but down and dead. Go get my father in lawand we drag it up to the truck. My largest WT to date since I am after food forthe family usually the first deer I see goes down. Thing with these WT, theyalways look small and compact but they are heavy! The doe dressed out to 60lbsof meat and the buck 80lbs which are now into yummy sausage.

Overall a good year, still haven’t gotten a mulie but nextyear for sure!
