Spent a few days hunting with a great buddy and one of his hunting buddies in region 8 last week. Had a new Remmy 700XCR II in 30-06 I had just purchased from our site sponsor Omineca Sports through Bartell. I had just sighted it in sat morning and was happy with the 1 inch groups at 100yrds with the factory 180gr federal powershocks I picked up. Figured it would do until I make some better. Also loved the Vortex scope I picked up at the same time.
Sunday we were at 5000ft and hunted in a blizzard. Visibility sucked but we still saw a lot of deer unfortunately no bucks. Wind was screaming and the snow was sideways blasting the face. Glad I left the beard on. LOL
Monday was a tough go. Finding nothing in the open while glassing we decided if they were not coming to us we would go into the timber. Was still -12 degrees at 10am. Didnt see much early morning. Around noon we decided to try a spot I had seen deer in years past.
So 3 of us split up and I hiked up a ridge I had been up twice before and had a great feeling about trying it again. Didnt take long to creep around this corner when I saw a log in some blow down that kinda looked like a deer at 50yds away. Now I had seen a ton of deer and bear like stumps but I decided to use the ole binos anyway and "Sweet Steeleco" it was a deer. And it was a buck bedded down in some thick crap. Couldnt count all points because of all the branches but saw it had antlers and at least 2 points on one side. Didnt really care cause it was any buck season so I just needed antler confirmation anyway. I must have woken it from its afternoon nap and it was just laying there broadside staring at me. It had to have watched me from about 80yrds away sneaking in. He was just gonna let me walk right by which I almost did damn it.
I bent down and took a knee. Raised the 06, found a hole in the branches he was hiding behind and let the gentle squeeze of a trigger do the rest. He rolled over gave a couple kicks and it was all over.
Walked over to him and was pleasantly surprised. Nice young 5x4 rack and very heavy bodied deer. Neck a little swollen and just starting to smell. We got him back to the truck wit ha game cart Magnumb here on HBC just purchased. Damn that was a nice treat. During the gutting and butchering we were all surprised at the amount of fat on him. He was healthy. On his rump at one area it was 2 inches thick of white fat.
Nice to tag out for mulies in region 8 since my daughter tagged me out in 3 lol
Unfortunately tuesday was uneventful for the 3 of us except for does and 2 young bears we let walk.
